DCYHA was represented in fine fashion at the most recent USA Hockey on-ice referees camp held 9/22/2007. In addition to returning veterans Bronson Kunzler, Bremen Acord, and P.J. Tanner (who all worked as referees in the the 2006-07 season), sixteen other players from Davis County Youth Hockey Association joined in the fray. When asked why they wanted to become a referee, DCYHA attendees stated reasons spanning from “I just love the sport of ice hockey” to “Where else could I earn $20 an hour?”.
Being a referee provides a great way to better learn the game and to give back to the hockey community. The day long training camp will need to be followed up by an online, open-book exam before the new players can earn their crest and start working games. New officials are allowed to work any game below their current age group and will be evaluated on an ongoing basis by Wasatch Ice Hockey Officials Association (WIHOA) to help them understand the rules, proper conduct, and on-ice positioning.
Did you know that the first female player to play in the NHL was Manon Rheaume?
Did you know that the very first professional game she played was for the Atlanta Knights on December 13, 1992?
Did you know that the team she played against was none other than our Salt Lake Golden Eagles?

Congratulations to Viewmont Varsity Hockey team for winning their season opener last night at the SDRC. Their 2007-08 debut was against Springville and Viewmont looked sharp from start to finish. Of course, the team made its share of pre-season mistakes but the final score of 7-2 provided a great night of hockey for the 100+ fans in attendance. (Players, of course, will get to see all the highlights and errors at next Wednesday’s video review.)
While the entire team played very well, Sophomore Sam Kitchen was in rare form as he collected a hat trick and an assist on the evening. Braedon Bailiff was also able to tally a 3-point performance on a goal and two assists. The other three goals were awarded to Jared Hurdman, Taylor Weaver, and Austin Facer was able to make his grandparents so proud while they watched him put a great rebound past the unprepared Springville netminder.
It’s been a long summer for us die hard rink rats so it’s nice to see the game back in action at the SDRC.
Entering their third season in the ECHL, our hometown hockey team has been very busy this summer working with their new NHL affiliate, the New York Islanders, putting together a new team. Returning coach Jason Christie announced the new affiliation on May 22nd, 2007 and fans should remember that the last time the Grizzlies worked with the Islanders, they won the league championship Turner Cup.
Yesterday the Grizzlies announced a preseason schedule with a pair of games that will benefit local youth hockey. Both games will host the Victoria Salmon Kings on October 12th and 13th at 7:30 p.m.. The interesting twist is that the game on the 12th will be held at the Park City Ice Arena and the Saturday game will be at the Acord Ice Center (which also happens to be the Grizzlie’s practice facility.) Tickets for both games will be sold at the arenas on the night of the games or you can call (801) 988-7825 to order in advance.
This should be a great opportunity to see your new Grizzlies for the first time and at very interesting venues. DCYHA players should remember to wear their jerseys to games whenever possible but please wash them first.
