As you may know, I have begun incorporating a lot of video in my coaching this year. I have some great footage of Viewmont Varsity, Viewmont JV, and DCYHA Bantams. This video has been an excellent source of information for my players to watch themselves in key situations and provides a little time to analyze their habits and playing styles. My intention is to create a series of useful segments for all hockey coaches to use and I have posted the first such video from a recent DCYHA goalie clinic. Just a few days before their season opener in Phoenix, the Utah Grizzlies beat the Victoria Salmon Kings 4-1. It was standing room only at the Acord Ice Center Saturday night. Normally the rink used only for Grizzlies practices, the pre-season doubleheader gave the Grizzlies a chance to play a game in Park City and the Acord Ice Center.
It was a very interesting game with most of the better players sitting out (because there wasn’t enough room on the players benches) and coach Christie tried a few combinations of new lines and last minute players to work out the kinks. The rink seemed much smaller as players iced the puck from their far blue line with a simple wrist shot that hit the top of the glass at the far end of the rink. In spite of being pre-season, several players dropped the gloves to try to win one of the last spots on the team roster. Grizzlie’s new goalie Mike Mole stopped 25 of the 26 Victoria shots as the Grizz outshot their visitors 38-26.
The puck drops on their home opener against the Idaho Steelheads at 7:05 on 10/26.
